The Gender Pay Gap

Jennifer Lawrence, an A list actress was paid 5 million dollars less than Leonardo DiCaprio another A list actor in “Don’t look up”. You may ask why this is and the answer would be the gender pay gap.

For every dollar a man makes a woman makes 89 cents in Canada. This is worse for woman who are of color, have dissabilities, are of indigenous decent and those who are transgender.

Women more often than not get paid less on performance and more on a set salary which means it’s harder for them to increase their salary.

The official government website about the pay gap states several reasons why it exists.

Some of these reasons include that women often leave the workforce to care for their families making them lose priority on seniority and advancement opportunities so they can get a promotion, they also encounter bias for simply being a woman when trying to get hired and that they are less likely to work in unionized environments.

They also state that the pay gap may differ from jobs such as in science related work where women make 0.92 cents for every dollar a man makes.

The gender pay gap is a horrible part of society and me and many others wish for it to be gone, but for now all we can do is wait and hope that our evolving society will continue to accept women more and more.
